O seu tamanho é tão ínfimo que só podem ser vistos se usarmos microscópios electrónicos muito poderosos.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:0;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;O curioso é que os átomos são constituídos por partículas ainda mais pequenas: protões, neutrões e electrões.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Por exemplo, um electrão pesa: &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;0,000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 9&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;gramas&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Apesar deste número representar uma quantidade tão pequena, dá imenso trabalho a escrever, pois tem 28 casas decimais. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;Para evitar a fastidiosa tarefa de escrever números como o anterior - com muitos algarismos -, os cientistas inventaram uma forma de simplificar a escrita deste tipo de quantidades: a &lt;span style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;notação científica&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;Esta notação é, portanto, uma maneira breve de escrever números muito grandes ou muito pequenos. A notação científica é muito vantajosa, porque utiliza pouco espaço e dá-nos imediatamente informação acerca da ordem de grandeza dos números.
